Valentine's Day, already celebrated in 15th-century England, honours lovers and birds, who are said to become engaged on this date. It was Pope Gelasius I, a Tunisian of Berber origin, who set the date in 495. St Valentine, a 3rd-century martyr, is said to have slipped a love note to his executioner's daughter, signed “your Valentine”. Isn't this the height of romanticism before its time? And isn't it a beautiful subject for an opera? Well, we are about to see – and hear – how opera and operetta draw inspiration from the love of Valentines, who, for the time being, will be magnificent tenor and soprano voices!
